BRYONY DOUGHERTY

Thoughtful, empathetic, pragmatic

Why do you want to represent your community?

I believe that the community in Loughton should have a stronger relationship with its minorities. I want to create a community where everyone feels safe and welcome within themselves as drama school is tough enough as it is. I want to advocate for causes like this as they are important to me as someone who is a person of colour and has experienced micro aggressions on campus. I want to be an advocate for what needs to be said.

How would you aim to engage with your community?

I would create events that celebrate the communities on campus such as women, people of colour and the lgbtq+ community. One thing I have in mind is to create a “bring-food-from-your-culture” event in which people can bring a part of their culture into the SU. Something I also have in mind is to invite guest speakers from the industry that could be a piece of inspiration for everyone (but especially to people from these marginalised communities ) on campus; this would be especially impactful for the likes of Black history month (for example) I would intend to create events that don’t separate these marginalised communities from the rest, but, to make the East 15 environment a celebration of everyone for everyone. I have already worked on improving welcome week by creating sessions where we talk about micro aggressions at drama school ,and, how not to be complicit in them - through further work I would implement more practices like this where there can be discussions and activities to help educate newcomers to the school. My aim is to create a space where minorities are celebrated and appreciated.
