For our final event this term, Kevin will be delivering a talk on the role played by feminism in psychoanalytic discourse. Abstract follows:
This talk will introduce the feminist critique of Freud put forth by the French psychoanalyst Luce Irigaray and explore the causes for its curious (non)reception within the analytic community. Through Irigaray’s work, we will attempt to assess the relevance of Freud to feminism, psychoanalysis’ potential for harm, psychoanalysis’ potential for relief, the status of interpretation in Freud and Lacan, what happens at the end of analysis, and the institutional history of French psychoanalysis in the 1960s and 70s. But above all, a study of Irigaray’s critical, recuperative deconstruction of psychoanalysis will help us approach our central question: How do we read Freud well?
