Movie Screening: Argentina 1985

21/11/2024 - 21/11/2024

5pm - 8:30pm

Cine 10

The University of Essex Latin American Society, the Essex Transitional Justice Network and the Department of Government invite you to attend a screening of the film "Argentina, 1985" this Thursday the 21st of November at 5 pm in Cine 10.

The film tells the story of The Trial of the Juntas – the trial against the leaders of Argentina’s dictatorship following the country’s democratic transition in 1983. The dictatorship in Argentina, between 1976 and 1983, was one of the bloodiest of the 20th century and tens of thousands were murdered or disappeared by the Junta.

The film will be followed by a Q&A and discussion featuring experts from the University's very own faculty, including:

  • Dr. Ebba Lekvall: Co-Director of the Essex Transitional Justice Network and Lecturer at Essex Law School. She holds a PhD and an LLM in International Human Rights Law, and specialises in reparations programmes in transitional justice processes, as well as international criminal law and indigenous rights. She has also worked as a law clerk in the Trial Chamber of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and spent some time at the International Criminal Court.
  • Dr. Sabine Michalkowski: Co-Director of the Essex Transitional Justice Network and Lecturer at Essex Law School. She is the chair of ETJN's research area economic dimensions of transitional justice, and, in recent years, her research has primarily focused on the Colombian peace and transitional justice process, particularly regarding the question of how to hold economic actors, such as business directors, landowners etc., to account for their role in conflict related crimes.
  • Dr. Luciana Zorzoli: Senior Lecturer in Employment Relations at Essex Business School, specialises in work and employment dynamics in Latin America. In her PhD, she studied International Labour Standards amid human rights violations and neoliberal shifts in Argentina. She co-edited two books on the topic The Argentinian Dictatorship and its Legacy: Rethinking the Proceso (Palgrave Macmillan; 2020) and Clase obrera y dictadura militar en Argentina (1976-1983) (The North Carolina Press, 2021).
