For the first time in the university history, students were brought together as Qawwali was held. A gathering of spiritual music also known as Mehfil-e-Sama, the Indian and Pakistan societies along with the Asian Community officer helped the SU to organise the cultural event to bring together all those who celebrate. Quratulain, VP Community and Engagement, said that she really saw the power of culture throughout the night. As it was a few days before Ramadan she didn’t think many people would turn up, but was delighted when over 350 students came to enjoy the evening.
Open to all, the traditional fashion show saw not just the South-East Asian community but also those from all around the world in a diverse celebration. Beginning with a traditional Bollywood dance from the Indian society, the evening was soon followed by two traditional solo dances- Bharatnatyam and Kathak. After a short break the Qawwali performances began, lasting for almost two hours with traditional songs sung and dances had.
“The community officer and societies brought people together…it was a cultural impact!” Quratulain said. “People whose culture it is got to have a home away from home…that’s what I felt in that moment.”
