Why I'm Excited For Diwali

You can join get involved with any Diwali event between now and 1 November

What is Diwali and who typically celebrates it?

Diwali, also known as the "Festival of Lights," is one of the most important and widely celebrated festivals in India and among millions of people around the world, particularly in Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and some Buddhist communities.. It typically spans five days and symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. The word "Diwali" comes from the Sanskrit term Deepavali, meaning "rows of lighted lamps," as homes, temples, and public spaces are illuminated with oil lamps, candles, and decorative lights during the festival.

Diwali holds diverse significance across different religions. For Hindus, it commemorates the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana and is also associated with Goddess Lakshmi visiting homes. Sikhs celebrate it as Bandi Chhor Divas, marking the release of Guru Hargobind Ji and 52 princes from imprisonment and for Jains, it signifies Lord Mahavira's attainment of moksha (liberation).

What do you love most about Diwali?

As an Indian myself, what I love most about Diwali is the sense of togetherness and celebration it brings. It's a time when communities gather, and there's a vibrant energy in the air. The decorations, with homes beautifully lit up with diyas and lights, create a warm and nostalgia for me. I cherish the tradition of offering prayers, seeking blessings, and the spirit of giving and gratitude. Diwali is not just about the festivities; it’s about the feeling of joy, unity, and the celebration of light over darkness, which resonates deeply with me.

Favourite memory from previous Diwali celebrations?

My favourite memory from the last Diwali Ball, "Chaand Sitaara," was when our Hindu Society committee came together to practice and perform dance routines. We put in so much effort over two weeks of practice, and it was amazing to see everyone, including those of us who had no prior dance experience (myself included), really give it our all. It was a core memory for me because it brought our group closer, and we bonded in such a meaningful way. I’m so excited to do it all over again this year!

Which SU Diwali event are you most looking forward to?

I’m most looking forward to the SU event by the lake on the 1st of Nov, which is the official day of Diwali which makes it extra special, and I can't wait to enjoy some chai—my favourite!

I’m also really excited about our Diwali Ball, with its performances, fun rangoli making, a 5-course meal, and a DJ. I’m so ready to dress in traditional attire and celebrate Diwali as best as we can, even while being away from home.
